The 23rd annual Garrard County Tobacco Cutting Contest drew a crowd Monday to Wayne and Junior Doolin's farm about 10 miles northwest of Lancaster on Fisher Ford Road.
The event, regarded by some as the annual championship of burley tobacco cutting, is conducted by the Tobacco Advisory Committee of the UK/Garrard County Cooperative Extension Service and sponsored by contributions from local businesses, financial institutions and tobacco warehouses.
Cash prizes totaling $1,150 were presented as follows:
Champion, Alvin Stamper, $500 and plaque; runner-up, Alan "Peanut" Edgington, $250 and plaque; third place, Daniel Edgington, $150; fourth place, Mark Lewis, $100; fifth place, Theron Owens, $50.
Rookie of the year: Michael Pingleton, $100 and plaque.
Runner-up Rookie of the Year: Alan Goley, $50 and plaque.
