Jared Holt scored both of the game’s goals as the Harrodsburg boys defeated Mercer County 2-0 at Lawrenceburg in the opening round of the Anderson County Invitational for their first win under new coach Chris Moyo.

Harrodsburg (1-1) got off about 10 shots against Mercer (0-2), which was shut out for the second straight night, according to Moyo.

Derrick Blacketer had seven saves in goal for the Pioneers, who rebounded from a season-opening 9-0 loss to Garrard County.

Harrodsburg plays North Laurel in a second-round game Thursday.

Montgomery County 2, Danville 0 - At Mount Sterling, Danville gave up a goal in each half of its season opener, and the Admirals went scoreless against Montgomery despite a strong second half.

"They pretty much owned us in the first half," Danville coach Gary Reynolds said. "In the second half we made some adjustments ... and I think we played a little bit better.

"We were able to string some passes together, and we were attacking much better. We definitely had some good looks at the goal; we just weren't able to convert anything."

Danville was outshot 13-8, and Montgomery goalkeeper Taylor Colliver had six saves.

Reynolds said the defense turned in a strong effort led by goalkeeper Matt Booth, senior Taylor Lamblin and juniors Kevin Smiley and Josh Rice.

Montgomery (1-0) got a goal from Chas Sargent with 13:15 remaining in the first half, then added an insurance goal with 4:14 to play in the game.

"We hung right in there with a good team, so I'm excited about what that means for us later on down the road," Reynolds said.
