Wayne runs over Mercer in 2nd half

August 29, 2004

HARRODSBURG - Wayne County scored 21 points in the second half and ran for 309 yards in a 32-13 win over Mercer County Friday.

The Cardinals (1-1) totaled 370 yards of offense compared to 161 for Mercer.

Mercer (1-1) took the opening kickoff to the Wayne 20 and scored four plays later on a touchdown by Andrew McCloud.

"We scored and everything seemed to be going good," Mercer coach Duane Hammons said. "At that point, they just took over."

Wayne led 11-7 at the half, and scored on its first possession after halftime to take an 18-7 lead. Mercer answered with a 66-yard scoring run by McCloud to get within 18-13.

However, Wayne took advantage of some Mercer mistakes to pull away.

"We held them on third down, but we got a personal foul and then got called for defensive offsides," Hammons said. "They scored again, and we couldn't get anything going in the second half, offensively, at all."

McCloud finished with 90 yards on 17 carries. Jordan Lyons had the only other rushing attempts, carrying the ball seven times for 49 yards.

Quarterback Michael Bottoms finished 2-for-10 for 22 yards and an interception.

Mercer hosts Harrodsburg Friday.
