Errant tee shots cost Bunch at Mid-Am

Joe Bunch says he'll leave the driver in the bag next time.

Bunch enjoyed his best finish yet in the Kentucky Golf Association Mid-Amateur, finishing just one stroke off the lead Tuesday at Danville Country Club. But he knows it could have been even better.

Two out-of-bounds tee shots on the 17th hole wiped out the three-stroke lead the Danville golfer held. He took a 9 on the hole to fall to 2-under par and fall behind eventual champion Greg McDonald.

Bunch shot 71 on consecutive days, tying Steve Rogers of Bowling Green for second place with a 142 in the 36-hole tournament, a statewide championship for amateurs 30 and over. McDonald was first among 95 golfers despite shooting 73 in the final round.

"It's very disappointing," Bunch said. "With a tournament of that size and with the competition that was there, I can't be disappointed - but I am a little bit. I'm happy with getting myself in position to win."

He said it was similar to his finish in Danville's club championship two years ago, when he lost a two-stroke lead by going out of bounds on 17.

"Next time it'll be a lesson learned," he said, adding that he'll probably hit a 3-iron if the situation presents itself again.

Bunch said he has played the state Mid-Am for six years, and his previous best finish was eighth. He said he plans to play in a USGA Mid-Amateur qualifier Friday at Cherry Blossom in Georgetown.

Chris Hill of Danville and Marty Anderson of Stanford finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 143. They shot 72 and 73, respectively, in the final round.
