September 08, 2004

Michael Wade and Jacob Denny scored to give the Garrard County boys a 2-0 victory over Boyle County Tuesday at Lancaster.

The Golden Lions (5-1-1) were outshot 16-15 by Boyle (2-2), but Garrard coach Jonathan Martin said the defense of Will Stevens, Travis Gilliam, Malcolm Smith and Anthony Henderson held fast.

"(The) defense came up big," Martin said.

Garrard goalkeeper Cory Lawwill notched his second shutout of the season.

Wade scored on a header off an assist from Stevens about 12 minutes into the game, and Denny put in a rebound of Corey Horn's deflected shot with about 13 minutes to play.

Model 3, Boyle County 0 - At Danville, Boyle (3-2-1) gave up three goals in the last 10 minutes after playing Model (4-0) to a scoreless draw for 70 minutes.

Model, which has allowed only one goal in its four games, got its first goal in the 71st minute, then added another within two minutes.

"I was very pleased with the way my girls played 70 minutes of soccer," Boyle coach Brian Deem said. "We executed much better than we had in the past couple of games.

"We need to learn to finish games; we need to learn to play 80 minutes of soccer. We have not learned that yet."

Berea 2, Garrard County 0 - At Lancaster, Garrard (1-4) got only seven shots on goal while Berea (3-1-1) took 26.

Taylor Short scored in the last two minutes of the first half and Julia Lark scored with about five minutes to play for Berea.
