Cross country: Boyle girls first in season-opening meet

September 10, 2004

WILMORE - The Boyle County girls took first place Thursday in their first invitational of the season, the AJ Special at Asbury College.

Boyle senior Abby Piper won the race and two of her teammates also finished in the top 10 to help the Lady Rebels finish five points better than runner-up Henry Clay in the nine-team competition.

Piper won the 3.1-mile race in 21 minutes, 56 seconds, over a minute faster than second-place finisher Adrienne Demarest of Henry Clay.

The Boyle boys were third among 12 teams, led by Patrick Morgan, who finished second with a time of 18:05.

"Our teams performed very well for our opening meet. I expect we will see improvement all season," Boyle coach Doug Sharp said.

Kelly Jameson was third and Kelsey Barbato was eighth for Boyle.

"I was glad to see ... Jameson step it up with a third-place overall finish," Sharp said. "Her practicing in the off-season has obviously paid off."

Morgan finished 37 seconds behind Nathan Liversedge of host West Jessamine, who won the boys race in 17:28.

Sam Morgan finished eighth and John Anderson was ninth for Boyle.

"To have three girls and three boys in the top ten finisher of this race is what will make our teams competitive," Sharp said.

Boyle will run in Danville's E.G. Plummer Invitational on Saturday.
