September 19, 2004

Centre College won its first two volleyball matches Saturday in the Centre College Classic.

Centre took three games in each match to defeat Brescia and Earlham.

The Colonels defeated Hanover 30-23, 30-27, 30-26. Leah Ballinger had 37 assists and 12 digs, Sarah Burger had 16 kills, Megan McElveen had 25 digs and Kate Bennett had 18 digs.

"Our block is really starting to come alive, which is great for us," Centre coach Stephanie Dragan said. "We had seven team blocks. That's probably our weak point right now, but we picked it up today.

"Brescia is a solid team, very very scrappy. A lot of balls I thought were down, their libero just got up."

In their second game, the Colonels defeated Earlham 30-10, 30-22, 30-19.

Whitney Faust served for 10 consecutive points in the first game, including four aces, which allowed Centre to pull away early.

Faust had nine kills, two solo blocks and one block assist to go with her four aces.

Burger had seven kills, and Ballinger had 30 assists and five aces.

McElveen had 14 digs.

"We kept our intensity and focus and came out victorious," Dragan said.

Centre plays its final two games of the Classic today at 3 and 5 p.m.
