McCloud scores four times in Mercer's 31-16 victory

RUSSELL SPRINGS - Andrew McCloud rushed for 288 yards and three touchdowns and returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for another touchdown to lead visiting Mercer County to a 31-16 victory over Russell County here Friday.

"Our offensive line did a nice job executing and Andrew looks like he's finally getting well and back in a groove," Mercer coach Duane Hammons said.

McCloud, who had 39 rushes, scored on runs of 1 and 88 yards in the first half and had a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. He also returned three kickoffs for 165 yards to give him 453 all-purpose yards.

Josh Ewing converted four extra points and also kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter.

"Jordan Lyons did an exceptional job leading our team considering this was his third week at quarterback," Hammons said. "We had some strange penalties stop some other scoring chances we had."


Lyons was 4-for-10 passing for 39 yards with all four completions going to former quarterback Michael Bottoms. Lyons also rushed for 22 yards on eight carries.

"We are just really pleased with the way Michael is catching the ball," Hammons said.

Mercer (3-2) had 351 yards of total offense compared to just 162 for the Lakers (1-4).

"We had some kids on defense, especially in the line, step up against a good option attack," Hammons said. "Our defensive backs played exceptionally well."

Mercer led 24-0 before Russell scored on a 3-yard run by Cooper and 2-yard run by Coffey to cut the deficit to 24-16 entering the fourth quarter.
