Greg Conley, who led the Boyle County boys soccer team to its first-ever regional championship last season, resigned as head coach Tuesday.
Athletic director Jim Spears said he and Conley had first talked Monday about the possibility of the coach leaving, and Conley turned in his resignation Tuesday.
"Greg's been really ill with pneumonia and so forth," Spears said. "He just thought it was in his best interest, and the best interest of the team, if he steps aside."
Middle school coach Cris McMann has been named interim coach for the remainder of the season.
Conley came to Boyle from Lafayette in 2001.
Boyle, which is 4-5 this season, won the 15th Region title last year and Spears said Conley brought a lot to the Boyle program.
