While driving through Danville today, I noticed a sign in front of a local church which read, "If you vote economy over morals, you get neither." Although not specifically stated, I am assuming this statement is meant to persuade we immoral and evil Democrats to not bother our minds with such trivial issues such as the economy, but to cast our votes in favor of the party with obviously stronger, and self-declared, morals and values. As a Democrat and life-long Christian, I am highly offended and personally insulted by the message being publicized by not only this particular church but many others around the country. The assumption that the Lord is on one side or the other of one country's political race is among other things presumptuous, arrogant and small-minded.
I am an average American wife and working mother striving to raise my children in a loving home with Christian values. I am dismayed by the current state of our country and of the immoral, illogical and irresponsible policies of our current president. Being a Democrat does not make me any less of a Christian or an American. I love the United States and I love the Lord, and it saddens me that some Republicans are attempting to "corner the market" on morality. Ultimately, when I cast my vote in November, my decision will be influenced by my relationship with God and by my hopes and dreams for all Americans, not by some silly sign.
