Advocate sportswriter Jill Erwin will be missed

September 26, 2004

Editor's note: Advocate-Messenger sportswriter Jill Erwin is leaving Oct. 8 to take a writing position with the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Richmond, Va.

Dear Editor:

The Advocate-Messenger is about to lose a wonderful writer in Jill Erwin. I was both jubilant and somewhat sad in hearing Jill say that she was leaving the Advocate.

Jill began work at the Advocate the same year (1999) that I became the head football coach at Casey County. She was the main writer from the Advocate who covered Casey sports, and I was fortunate enough to get to become good friends with Jill.

One of the best things about coaching is all of the people that you get to meet. Jill was someone I respected because she always respected the sports and people that she covered. She always worked with nothing but utter professionalism and always brought humor to our conversations. She also was very candid during the times that I asked for her advice on things.

I will certainly miss Jill, but wish her the best of luck on a job that was well-deserved. She is a brilliant writer who is now taking her talents to that "higher level."

I know Jill will succeed because, like most great sportswriters, she is willing to celebrate the lives of others more than her own. That is a trait not commonly seen in our "look at me" society of today. Keep up the good work Jill, and know that you will be missed.
