Centre teams win

September 27, 2004

The Centre College volleyball team beat DePauw University Sunday for the first time since DePauw joined the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1998.

Centre won 30-24, 30-25, 31-29 in the SCAC East Division round-robin at Sewanee, Tenn. This was also the first time DePauw had lost an East Division match.

Centre (12-4, 3-1 SCAC) didn't start the day well as it lost 27-30, 27-20, 26-30 to Rose-Hulman.

"I wish I had an explanation for the loss. I guess we were just looking ahead to DePauw," said Centre coach Stephanie Dragan.

Dragan said the Colonels "played a great match" to defeat DePauw.

"This was a big victory for us and one we had been waiting a long time for," Dragan said.

Senior Leah Ballinger had 72 assists in the two matches and also had 16 digs against DePauw. Kate Bennett had 23 kills in the two matches and had eight assists and 10 digs against DePauw. Whitney Faust had 23 kills in the two matches also. Sarah Burger had 14 kills and two blocks against Rose-Hulman and Megan McElveen had 22 digs in the win over DePauw.

Derek Roberts had two goals for Centre (6-2, 1-1 SCAC) and David Horne, Kent Starkweather and Todd Davis one each in Sunday's 5-2 win here over Hendrix.

Centre outshot the visitors 24-17. Both teams had nine corner kicks.

"This was a good win for us after our loss Friday to Rhodes," Centre coach Jeb Burch said. "We defended poorly at times and have a lot of things to work on, but we also won."

Roberts' first goal just over 12 minutes into the match was matched by a goal from Nic Forsten of Hendrix six minutes later. With only one minute left in the first half, Stan Simek passed to Horn behind the defense and Horn scored.

Trey Janes set up a goal by Roberts two minutes into the second half. Less than a minute later, Davis hit what Burch called a "30-yard blast that the (goal) keeper had no chance to stop" for a 4-1 lead. Starkweather got the final goal on a 25-yard shot after Hendrix had cut the lead to 4-2.

Brad Borough had two assists while Simek, Matt Walksler and Janes had one.

Goalkeepers David Cupery and Chris Creger combined for five saves for Centre.
