A Harrodsburg man who had allegedly just robbed a country store at gunpoint was apprehended Tuesday after he crashed his car into a hay wagon as he was trying to make his getaway, Mercer County Deputy Eric Barkman said.
Kris Shell, 29, of 119 Evergreen St., was charged with first-degree burglary. He is under guard at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where is undergoing surgery to repair his left elbow that was injured in the accident, Barkman said.
According to Barkman, Shell was wearing a mask when he entered B & S Grocery on Talmage-Mayo Road about 9:50 a.m., held owner Wallace Sheperson at gunpoint and demanded money. Sheperson handed over $1,060 in cash and Shell drove away in his Hyundai Scoop, Barkman said.
While driving on Cole Road, Shell rounded a curve and crashed into a hay wagon that was traveling down the road. A witness called police to report the accident and Barkman responded. When he arrived on the scene, Sheperson, who had followed Shell's vehicle, was there and told the deputy "That's the guy who just robbed me," Barkman said.
