Commonwealth Cancer Center has announced it is the first cancer clinic in Kentucky to offer the technology of a combined PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography) scanner to patients in four locations in central Kentucky.
Patients in Danville, Somerset, Frankfort and London will no longer have to travel to Lexington or Louisville to gain the benefits of a PET/CT scan. This imaging technology is now being offered in each of these locations on designated days of the week and for emergency situations.
The new scanner is housed in a large coach, creating a mobile office environment, based in Danville. A dedicated team of three specifically trained PET/CT staff members will travel with the scanner to each location and assist the local oncologist during each scan. An additional team member will be centralized in the Danville office to coordinate the scheduling and billing.
Known as the Reveal-RT Duo, this scanner can complete a total body scan in less than 20 minutes and produces a comprehensive, 3-D image with incomparable accuracy. The shortened length of the procedure allows for increased patient comfort and less body movement during the scan, producing a more precise image.
