Linebacker Ben Bates of Plain City, Ohio, has joined Kentucky's 2005 football recruiting class.
Bates committed while attending Kentucky's summer camp, but had not made the announcement public until Thursday.
He was averaging 12 tackles per game this season before fracturing his ankle. He's still hoping to play in November.
Bates said several schools, including Wisconsin, wanted him as a defensive lineman, but he wanted to play linebacker and UK was willing to give him that chance. Notre Dame, Purdue and West Virginia were the other schools showing the most interest in Bates.
He's the sixth high school player to say he'll sign with UK in February.
