Crutchfield leads Garrard over Wayne

October 10, 2004

MONTICELLO - Quarterback Spencer Crutchfield ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more and had a team-high 11 tackles Friday night to lead Garrard County to a 49-14 win over Wayne County.

Garrard (6-2, 2-0 Class AA, District 4) secured its sixth straight victory by answering both of Wayne's scores with 21 unanswered points.

Meanwhile, the Golden Lions' defense kept Wayne (4-3, 1-1) in check by containing the Cardinals' running game.

"Our defensive front came through for us big time," Garrard coach Steve Stonebraker said. "I thought this was the best game our defensive line has played for us all season long. That's good to see against a good rushing opponent, because we didn't have that against Danville, Harrison (County) or Mercer (County).

Wayne had 199 offensive yards, of which 131 came from tailback Matt Goff.

Garrard's offense rolled up 479 yards, including 212 passing yards by Crutchfield, who was 13-for-20. He was also the game's leading rusher with 176 yards on 11 carries.

"I thought Spencer did a good job of making some adjustments on the fly, and our receivers did a great job in scramble situations," Stonebraker said.

Crutchfield threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jared Prewitt on the Lions' first possession, then ran for a 31-yard score to give them the lead for good after Wayne tied the game at 7-all on a 20-yard run by Goff.

Garrard added two second-quarter scores on a 6-yard run by Zach Doan and a 22-yard run by Crutchfield to take a 28-7 halftime lead.

Wayne scored on the first series of the second half on Goff's 6-yard run, but Crutchfield answered with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Dan Leavell and a 12-yard scoring run to make it 42-14. Doan got his second score on a 3-yard run early in the fourth quarter shortly before Garrard's starters left the game for good.

Doan had 55 rushing yards on 11 carries. Leavell led the receivers with three catches, and Daniel Barker had two.

Kicker Corey Horn made all seven of his extra-point attempts.

Leavell had nine tackles for the Lions, Barker had seven and Doan had six.

Garrard has an open date this week. Its next game is Oct. 22 against Russell County.
