Millsaps beats Centre 20-18

October 10, 2004

JACKSON, Miss. - Centre College couldn't recover after giving up 20 first-half points, and the Colonels lost 20-18 to Millsaps Saturday night.

Millsaps (2-2, 1-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) took a 20-0 lead behind a strong rushing attack that produced 233 yards.

"We let them control the ball on us. They really just put it to us in the first half running the ball," Centre coach Andy Frye said.

Centre (3-3, 1-2) got on the board with 14 seconds left in the first half on Brian Behrendt's touchdown pass to David Crowley, then pulled within 20-10 on Chris Thompson's field goal in the third quarter.

The Colonels' defense kept Millsaps off the board in the second half, but the offense made two critical mistakes in the fourth quarter. First, Centre failed to score after an interception and 19-yard return by Brian Downs gave them the ball inside the Millsaps 30-yard line. Then a fumble with about seven minutes left allowed Millsaps to kill about four minutes before the Colonels got the ball back.

Centre scored its final touchdown with no time left on a Bobby Gaffney 1-yard run.

Behrendt was 31-for-53 for 272 yards. Crowley had nine catches for 122 yards, and Adam Clark had eight for 70 yards. Leading rusher Nick Warren had 49 yards on 15 carries.

Centre's top tacklers were Chad Loveless and Nathan Fell with eight each and Brian Dougherty with seven.

"We showed some promise in the second half. I was glad to see us come out and play harder," Frye said.

Tyson Roy rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns for Millsaps.
