LIBERTY - Construction is moving along on the new Jones Park Elementary School on Ky. 70 East where students at Middleburg and Garrett elementary students will attend in the fall of 2005.

With concrete work going on, the school layout is visible, Larry Schwering, architect with Lucas/Schwering Architects in Lexington, told the Casey County Board of Education Monday.

Concrete blocks are on site, and slabs for the foundation are being poured. The door frames will soon go up, he said.

Schwering said D.W. Wilburn Inc. of Lexington wants to have paving in place before winter at the entrance to the school. He said the glazed tile should be on site by next week and walls will go up soon.

Carmicle Masonry of Dunnville plans to have a full staff when the block and tile are installed, the architect said.

Schwering said the work is two weeks ahead of schedule.

The board approved a $279,871 payment to the contractor and $24,327 for purchase orders.

A new contract for Jones Park Elementary is for $5,568,721, down from the original bid of $8,128,000.

Several items were deleted from the bid package to get the price down.

The board also approved a change order on the contract that allows for 36 extra days for the general contractor because of delays in getting building materials.
