Will cast his first vote for Kerry

October 14, 2004

Dear Editor:

I want to compliment Mr. Shane Talbot on one of the most targeted editorials I have read. The upcoming election seems to have brought out the worst in people. As a senior at Boyle County High School, I will vote for the first time. I find myself every day reading the paper and listening to the news to hear what our candidates are saying. I am the first to say that I am a registered Democrat with conservative ideas. Had I voted four years ago, I would have voted for George Bush without hesitation; however, in the past four years George Bush has truly shown his true colors. He has lied to the country, has taken us to war, has allowed his counterpart, the vice president, to benefit from the war via Halliburton, and has orchestrated one of the most negative campaigns of any candidate or incumbent. As Mr. Talbot states, "I support our troops but not the war, for they are following orders to do so from a man who was appointed to the presidency. I supported some retaliation against our attackers on Sept. 11. Those attackers were led by bin Laden and not by Iraq."

For all who remember on Dec. 7, 1942, "a day that will live in infamy," our great country was attacked. We retaliated against Japan, our aggressor, but we didn't use the attack to benefit and attack Mexico or Canada. When George W. Bush attacked Iraq, he didn't attack our aggressor. He attacked for all the wrong reasons, whether to allow Mr. Cheney to benefit from Halliburton, to finish something his father couldn't finish, or merely to satisfy our country's thirst for oil. On Nov. 2, 2004, I will stay within party lines and cast my vote for John Kerry in an attempt to take America off the downward spiral into debt and recession that Bush has led us.
