McDowell Wellness Center will start a six-week weight management and exercise program Nov. 4 for children ages 10 to 12. Classes for the new program will meet at the Wellness Center, 1107 Ben Ali Drive, 6-7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 16. The class will not meet on Thanksgiving.
"We recognize that many of the children in our community may be overweight, and we want to offer this program to get them started on a healthy lifestyle that will extend into their adult years," said Robert Jameson, director of the Wellness Center.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 15 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight.
Each session of the program will include nutrition counseling and a variety of exercise options. Parents are welcome, and are required to attend a portion of the initial and final sessions. Nancy Ricker, a registered dietitian, and Becky Berry, a wellness counselor, will lead the program.
