Danville girls win district title, 2-1

October 24, 2004

LANCASTER - The Danville girls captured their first district title since 2001 with a 2-1 win over Marion County in the 29th District Tournament championship Saturday at Garrard County.

The Lady Admirals also earned the right to host the 15th Region Tournament, which is expected to begin Monday night.

Danville (13-3-1) rallied in the second half after Marion (10-6) took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

"We've been down before in games ... and rather than giving up, I think they actually responded the opposite way," Danville coach Michael Lauer said. "You don't always win those games, but this is one of those games where they responded in the right way. Usually with young kids you don't see that."

Tasha Milby tied the game in the 42nd minute with a 20-yard shot that glanced off the Marion goalkeeper's outstretched hand and into the top corner of the net.

The Lady Admirals took the lead in the 47th minute when a Marion player kicked the ball into her own net.

Marion got its goal in the 19th minute when Danville goalkeeper Liz Ruth's attempt to clear the ball glanced off a Lady Knight and back into the net.

Ruth had three saves, and Lauer said two of them were extremely difficult. "She really did a good job," Lauer said.

Danville outshot Marion 16-6, and Lauer said the Lady Admirals kept Marion's Laura Swencki, who scored three goals in a semifinal win over Boyle County, under wraps.

"We really did a good job of containing Swencki," he said. "We really paid attention to her. She didn't get any (shots) around the box or inside the box."

Danville's Julie Johnson was named the tournament's most valuable player. Teammates Ruth, Milby, Jordan Davis and McKenzie McAfee made the all-tournament team.

Danville will host 30th District runner-up Lincoln County in one regional semifinal, while Marion will meet Somerset in the other. Lauer said he expects the four-team tournament to be played Monday and Tuesday at Admiral Stadium.
