Lincoln jail escapees enter not guilty pleas

October 26, 2004

STANFORD - Two inmates captured after a brief escape from the Lincoln County Regional Jail pleaded not guilty Monday to second-degree escape charges in Lincoln District Court.

Benji Stout, 24, of Lancaster, and Christopher Spoonamore, 24, of Berea, allegedly scaled the recreation pen wall and cut through the surrounding fence at the jail Friday night. Police recaptured the pair Saturday morning behind Stanford's Wal-Mart, with the help of local farmers.

It was Stout's third escape attempt. He was being held on previous escape and forgery charges and will remain at the Lincoln County Regional Jail. Spoonamore was being held on previous escape and drug-related charges and will now be transported to Kentucky State Reformatory in LaGrange.

The two will appear at 2 p.m. Nov. 1 for a preliminary hearing in district court.

A third prisoner who escaped, Richard Thomas Schmiers, 23, of Lincoln County, remained at large today. He had been lodged at the jail on charges of theft more than $300. He was last seen wearing an orange prison jump suit and flip flops.

Schmiers is described as a medium-build white male with green eyes and short brown hair, weighing 185 pounds. He is not believed to be armed or dangerous but should not be approached, authorities said. Anyone with information about his location should call 911 or the jail at (606) 365-4580.
