Fortunately for the community, several fine candidates have emerged to provide Danville with some relief from the misguided leadership of Mayor Bowling and his supporters on the city commission. Though several of these men would unquestionably improve the current status of our dysfunctional city commission, I believe Tom McKune is the most qualified of the newcomers.
It was my good fortune to work with Tom for 13 years when he was director of admissions at Centre College; he was my direct supervisor for most of that time. Tom, simply put, was a great boss. He is totally honest, and he treats everyone fairly and equally.
Though he is a very well-educated and cerebral person, he is the polar extreme of an intellectual snob. Tom grew up in a modest, small-town background, and he was able to acquire his education through hard work, sacrifice, and his God-given talents. He has the courage and independence to stand up to bullies and brash politicians, and he has the empathy to help those who do not have the wherewithal to defend themselves adequately. His laudable work with the Danville school board and the Human Rights Commission verifies that he is not only bright and competent; he will go out of his way to do what is best for everyone in our community. Tom is articulate and can be outspoken if the need arises, but he is also one of the best listeners I have ever encountered.
