Mongiardo: Kentucky needs 'a new direction'

November 01, 2004|DR. DANIEL MONGIARDO

Editor's note - The following is a response by Dr. Daniel Mongiardo, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, to the Advocate's endorsement of Jim Bunning, the Republican candidate.

Over the past year, I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of Kentuckians as I have crisscrossed the state. As I listened to the stories of people I met, I was struck by how many fellow Kentuckians shared my feeling that we need a new direction for our commonwealth.

Our middle-class families are struggling. Good jobs are being shipped overseas at a record pace, and the few that have been replaced are paying thousands less and with no benefits. While our paychecks have been shrinking, we are paying more than ever for healthcare, prescription drugs, gas, and college tuition.

Jim Bunning has had his chance, and he has not gotten the job done for us. I know we can and must do better.

As a state senator, I fought for healthcare for the working families, teachers, veterans and children of our Commonwealth. I worked to protect Kentucky jobs and ensure that all of Kentucky's children have an equal opportunity for an education. I have stood to protect the sanctity of life and marriage, and have always advocated our Second Amendment right to bear arms.

I will always defend Kentucky values and Kentucky jobs.

When I made the decision to run for United States Senate, I made a commitment to keep the issues of this election at the center of my campaign, because I believe the people of Kentucky deserve no less than that.

My plan to take care of Kentucky will improve our healthcare system, expand educational opportunity for every child and create new, good paying jobs in Kentucky - not overseas.

As your U.S. senator, I will work to restore the hope of the American dream by fighting for middle-class families and Kentucky values. I ask you to join me in leading Kentucky in a new direction.
