(AP) - Jack A. Caldwell Sr., 79, pleaded not guilty Monday to murdering his next-door neighbor as the neighbor was mowing last summer.
Caldwell was indicted in the Aug. 22 death of Jim Trachsel, 63, a retired educator.
Trachsel was shot five times. Defense lawyers have said Caldwell fired a .22-caliber semiautomatic rifle after he was startled by the mower while hunting skunks in his back yard.
At Monday’s arraignment, Boyle County Circuit Judge Darren Peckler scheduled a Dec. 7 status hearing. Caldwell remains free on bond.
