Ballinger gets second SCAC volleyball award

For the second time this season, Centre College volleyball player Leah Ballinger (Butler, Ky.) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball co-player of the week.

Ballinger, a senior setter from Butler, was honored after leading the Colonels to a 5-0 record in the final home matches of her career, including including a co-championship of the Centre Halloween Bash, in which she was named co-most valuable player.

For the week, Ballinger posted 179 assists, averaging 11.9 per game. She had 40 assists in a 3-0 defeat of Washington and Lee University, ending the Generals 19-match winning streak.

Ballinger also had 20 kills on the week and only two errors on 63 attempts for a .287 attack percentage to go along with two service aces. Defensively, she notched 24 digs and assisted on five blocks.


She also earned a co-player of the week honor from the SCAC on Sept. 20. She becomes the second Centre volleyball player to be honored twice by the conference this season, joining freshman Sarah Burger.

Centre hosts field hockey tourney

Centre will host the inaugural SCAC field hockey championship Saturday and Sunday.

Rhodes will be the top seed, followed by DePauw, Sewanee and Centre.

Rhodes will face Centre at noon Saturday, and DePauw will square off with Sewanee at 2 p.m. The consolation match will take place at noon Sunday, followed by the championship at 2 p.m.

Rhodes and DePauw shared the regular season crown with 5-1 conference records and split two matches against each other.

Centre finished 2-14 overall and 0-6 in SCAC play. Senior Megan Jacob led the Colonels with three goals and an assist for a team-high seven points. Freshman Taylor Gray also tallied seven points on two goals and three assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo led the SCAC in saves (141) and saves per match (10.07). Guagliardo recorded two shutouts and finished the year with an .820 save percentage in 14 matches.
