LIBERTY - A man who allegedly tried to purchase votes Tuesday with $25 in cash and whiskey will appear in Casey District Court 9:30 a.m. Nov. 18, court records show.
Edgar J. "Joe" Ellis, 57, of 5427 Hwy 78 West, Hustonville, was arrested on a warrant Tuesday shortly after the polls closed charging him with making an expenditure to person to vote/not vote/for/against.
He is accused of trying to give a sum or money and/or a quantity of whiskey to a voter for a particular candidate running for a seat on the Casey school board, according to a criminal complaint signed by state police Detective Alex Wesley and Circuit Judge James G. Weddle.
Ellis allegedly made the offer to several people, and one of them alerted state police.
There was no indication that the candidate, John Cox, knew about Ellis' alleged efforts. police said.
Ellis was released from the Casey County Detention Center on a $1,000 cash bond.
