As we rush into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, often we overlook two important dates that fall early in November: National Family Literacy Day on Nov. 1 and Veterans Day on Nov. 11. The St. Asaph Chapter of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution would like to remind your readers of the importance of both of those days.
Promotion of education is one of the cornerstones of the National Society so as to develop in all people the capacity to perform the duties of American citizens. DAR members across the country voluntarily tutor, help students prepare for the high school equivalency tests, teach English as a second language, establish reading programs, and raise funds for literacy causes. We encourage all parents to read to your children and encourage them, in turn, to read to you.
Veterans Day is another special day for DAR members. We not only mark and honor the graves of the Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots whose names we proudly wear on our ancestor bars, but we honor the living veterans by participation in many veterans' services. These are the men and women who have offered their services and even their lives for the preservation of the American way of life, and we can do no less than honor them on this special day. The St. Asaph Chapter encourages you to join us in our efforts for education and patriotism.
