Boyle Judge-Executive Tony Wilder and the fiscal court members deserve a round of applause for the way they have brought the issue of the county's financial problems and a possible tax increase to the public's attention.
Asking county department heads to come up with five percent cuts from their budgets is a good way to show the public how they would be affected by a reduction in county spending.
We also like the idea of the court holding hearings throughout the county to get the public's response to both a proposed increase in the county payroll tax and the suggested cuts in county programs if that tax increase is not passed.
It's not a pretty picture either way. Boyle County residents are facing either a tax increase or some cuts in services. It behooves the fiscal court members to listen to what county taxpayers have to say about the available options.
