A Danville resident received the Vocational Achievement Award from the Kentucky Office for the Blind at a recent ceremony in Louisville.
Darah Turpin, an employee at Fazoli's Italian Restaurant, was presented the award at a recognition event sponsored by the office, a Department for Workforce Investment agency in the Education Cabinet.
The award recognizes a person with a visual impairment who has gone through rehabilitation services and overcome obstacles to find employment.
OFB vocational rehabilitation counselor Jannell Turner, who nominated Turpin for the award, said Turpin had several barriers to employment because she is both deaf and legally blind and had little work experience. To overcome those barriers, Turpin was assigned a job coach to help her adjust to her job at Fazoli's. OFB also gave Turpin independent living services in her new home to help her be more independent.
