Last week, 38 young Americans died in Iraq. Last week, 78 young Americans were wounded, many of them horribly, perhaps never to walk again or see again or hold their young sons or daughters in arms that are now missing. Last week, well past the election, the chicken hawk George Bush sent even more young people to a fate that he himself was too cowardly to face at their age.
Last week, I was once again relieved that my son is not back in Iraq. For the time being, he is safe. And, yes, I felt guilty in being so relieved because for many parents last week was probably the worst week of their lives, and I know I am not immune to the possibility of that grief.
Last week, I became angry once again at the hubris and lies that led our great country into this horrible mess. I became angry at all of those who gleefully voted this administration back into office, and I wonder if they even took note of the fact that last week 38 young Americans died in Iraq.
