English Language Learners (ELL) resource teacher Carol Reed, Centre College consultant Betsy Dahms and three students served by ELL provided an overview of services and language skill demonstration Thursday night to the Boyle County Board of Education.
Reed and Dahms detailed the partnership with Centre's Spanish Department in which Centre students perform 15 service-learning hours per term working with Latino students enrolled in Boyle schools.
ELL students for the past two years have participated in a summer program in which they received small group instruction in their homes, enabling students to improve their reading and writing skills.
Reed and Dahms last year participated in the Eastern Kentucky University Limited English Proficient Academy in which they received valuable training. Through the program, Boyle received $1,000 to purchase supplies for ELL students. A team from Boyle County is participating this year in the academy sponsored by EKU and the Kentucky Department of Education.
