LIBERTY - Casey County Attorney Tommy Weddle has asked to be removed as prosecutor in a vote-buying case to avoid any appearance he might have a conflict of interest.
Weddle sent a letter Friday requesting disqualification to the Special Prosecutors Division of the state Attorney General's Office, said his secretary, Rebecca Hatter.
Weddle, who could not be reached for comment, is asking to be recused from the case against Edgar Joe Ellis, who is accused of using cash and whiskey to buy a vote for the District 1 seat on the Casey County Board of Education. John Cox defeated Sheila Elliott for that position on Nov. 2.
Weddle's sister, Linda Hatter, is superintendent of Casey County schools, and his family supported Cox in the race. Weddle said previously that he knew nothing about the case except what was contained in the arrest complaint filed by Kentucky State Police.
