Lincoln girls top Pulaski

SOMERSET - Megan Pitts hit two free throws with seven seconds left to give the Lincoln County girls a 57-55 victory over Pulaski County on the opening night of the high school basketball season.

Pitts' points helped Lincoln pull out a game that was close for most of three quarters after the Lady Patriots erased a 22-9 deficit.

Amber Statham, who led Lincoln with 15 points, hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter to spark the rally.

"We had a big lift from Statham that got us back in it, and it was pretty much nip and tuck from there on in," Lincoln coach John Kolasa said.

Kendra Garris also had four rebounds in the period for Lincoln, which outscored Pulaski 15-5 to pull within 27-24 at halftime.


Pulaski shredded Lincoln's press in the first quarter to build its early lead.

"They beat our press pretty much however they wanted to, and they got a lot of baskets early," Kolasa said.

Statham was 5-for-5 from the field, and all her shots were from 3-point range. She also had three rebounds and two assists.

Lincoln went 9-for-15 from 3-point range and shot 41.3 percent (19-for-46) overall from the field. The Lady Patriots also hit 10 of 14 free throws and had 13 assists and 19 turnovers.

Pitts and Jenny Ralston had 11 points and three assists each for Lincoln. Pitts also had a game-high nine rebounds, helping her team outrebound Pulaski 33-21.

Jenny Jones had seven rebounds, Garris had five boards and Lindsay Long had three steals.

Pulaski got 20 points each from Susanna Todd and Chasity Wesley. Todd was 7-for-12 from the field with five rebounds, five assists and four steals; Wesley was 9-for-14 with four boards and three assists.

Pulaski shot 47.8 percent (22-for-46) from the field but hit only seven of 18 free throws. The Lady Maroons had 13 assists and 14 turnovers.
