Durham spoils HHS coach's debut

NICHOLASVILLE - Harrodsburg had no answer for Brett Durham on Tuesday, as the Pioneers dropped their season opener 72-52 at East Jessamine in the coaching debut of Chad Luhman.

Durham pumped in 44 points as the Jaguars led 25-14 at the half.

"They jumped out kind of early on us," Luhman said. "Brett Durham killed us. They really got it out to him, and he got a lot of one-on-ones and free throws. We fought back in third quarter a little, but they were a lot bigger than us, and a lot more skilled."

Justin Doolin led Harrodsburg with 21 points, Cory Jackson added 13 and Chase Wofford scored nine. The Pioneers trailed 53-40 heading into the final period, but could get no closer.

Eurich Downey scored 13 to hit double figures for East Jessamine.


Harrodsburg 44, Frankfort 39 - At Harrodsburg, a big fourth quarter boosted Harrodsburg (1-0) over Frankfort (0-1).


The Panthers led 9-3 after the first quarter and 24-12 at the break. The Pioneers cut the Frankfort lead to 33-29 and outscored the Panthers 15-6 over the final eight minutes to get the win.

Laila Graves scored 13 points and Sarah Roach added 12 for the Pioneers.

Burgin 56, Berea 35 - At Berea, Burgin (1-0) got a 20 points and 10 boards from Taylor Bottoms in a win over Berea (0-1) in the first round of the Bluegrass Conference Tournament. Burgin plays Model in a semifinal game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Sayre.

Burgin was 21-of-53 from the floor for 40 percent, went 9-for-12 at the line and grabbed 33 boards.

"That's not too bad overall. We didn't play a real strong game, but we'll work on some things we need to work on," Burgin coach Keith Monson said.

Burgin led 16-10 after one quarter and 34-13 at the half.

Amanda Carey scored nine points and Bev Harris added eight for the Bulldogs.
