Think carefully about giving pets for Christmas

December 10, 2004

Dear Editor:

During the holiday season, we all try to find the perfect gift for each person on our list. Especially when we have children, we want very much to make all their wishes come true.

The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society encourages parents to think very carefully before giving in to a child's wishes for a new pet this holiday. Bringing a dog or cat into the house should be a family decision and should be carefully thought out, since that pet will be with the family for many years.

If you have made a thoughtful decision to give a pet this holiday, we ask you to consider a humane society dog or cat. Each of our kittens and cats, puppies and dogs is unique. And each comes complete with all vaccinations, de-worming and spay/neuter surgery so you won't have to worry about bringing more unwanted pets into the world.

And what's the best way to give a pet from the humane society? A gift certificate! Put one of our colorful gift certificates under the tree with a pet toy or collar. Then, after the holiday bustle has calmed down, bring your child to the humane society to pick out the perfect companion from the dozens of sweet, beautiful animals at our shelter.
