Lincoln man allegedly shoots at police

December 13, 2004

A Hustonville man was arrested Sunday after allegedly firing shots and fighting with police.

State police responded to a call that there was a fight at the home of Randy Smith, 5383 Ky. 2141, according to a press release.

When Trooper Clyde Bertram and Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff Ron Luster arrived at the home, the alleged victim, who remains unnamed, met them in the roadway. Police said shots were soon fired in their direction from Smith's home.

Bertram said he grabbed the woman, ran to seek cover, and called for backup. Then, Bertram said he saw Smith climb out the back window and run. Bertram chased him.

When Trooper Butch Canter arrived, he also began to run after Smith.

The troopers said they saw Smith come from behind a residence down the road, and he began to fight with Canter.

Smith was charged with wanton endangerment, third-degree assault and resisting arrest.

Police brought Smith to Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford where he was treated and released.

He was then booked into the Lincoln County Regional Jail.

Canter received a minor injury, police said, but no other officers were injured.

State police detective Van Wright is investigating.
