CARTERSVILLE (AP) - A state police trooper fatally shot a suspect that had brandished a knife and had tried to stab the officer outside a Garrard County residence Saturday evening, state police said.
Trooper Sonny Dunaway, an officer with Post 7 based in Richmond, shot and killed the man after the man fled the scene of a traffic stop at 7:33 p.m., according to a statement from state police.
The man was pronounced dead at 8:27 p.m. at the scene in the Cartersville area, which is southwest of Berea.
Police did not release the man's identity because his family had not been notified of his death.
After the car he was in was stopped by Dunaway on Ky. 954, the man, armed with a knife, exited the vehicle and took a female inside the vehicle as a hostage, state police said. The woman broke free, and the man fled to a nearby residence, where he tried to get inside.
