Gov. Ernie Fletcher has appointed Rick McQuerry to fill the vacant seat on Boyle County Fiscal Court. He will be the first Republican magistrate in recent memory.
McQuerry, much like his predecessor Martin G. Curtis, is not in favor of new taxes. After attending all of the community meetings held about the county's fiscal situation, McQuerry said he is not convinced that an increase in payroll tax is necessary.
He plans to study the budget and use his business and engineering backgrounds to figure out how the county can keep services and reduce costs.
"Although the county is not a business, there are good business practices that can be applied to management of the county," he said. "I've never seen a budget that you couldn't make leaner, and I've been dealing with budgets for 20 years."
