I was quite alarmed to read Howard Coop's letter in Monday's paper talking about how a grand secular conspiracy is trying to ruin the United States by subverting Christmas and the like. I just have one question for Mr. Coop: How the heck did he get into their secret meetings and find out about their Great Secular Agenda? Is he a spy? Does he know their secret handshake? Did he hack into their huge database and download their plans to remake America by forcing impressionable young American students to worship some god of the Winter Solstice?
Of course not, because Mr. Coop and those who believe in some alleged culture war have been misguided by years of right-wing radio and self-serving demagogues who unfortunately tend to cloak themselves in religious fervor. In other words, there is no secular-atheist conspiracy, and their never was. What has happened instead is an unintentional subversion of values that comes about when people inadvertently and unwittingly replaced the religious nature of Christmas with nauseating consumerism, chocolate, and lots of cheap plastic toys that mostly come from China.
