It would appear that Gov. Ernie Fletcher has made a good choice to fill the vacancy on Boyle Fiscal Court.
Rick McQuerry, plant manager at a Nicholasville furniture company, brings a solid business management background to the job, and his management skills should serve county residents well - particularly in a time when the county government is spending some $700,000 more a year than it is receiving in tax revenues.
McQuerry, who will be the only Republican on the court, has been attending hearings on Judge-Executive Tony Wilder's proposal for increasing the county payroll tax, and he said in an interview this week that he still is not convinced that the increase is needed.
McQuerry is planning to do exactly what needs to be done: He said he will study the budget and use his business experience to find ways to reduce costs while still maintaining county services.
