I was recently driving through the intersection of Third and Main and happened to glance down Main at the seasonal decorations. In a flash, a wave of nostalgia broke over me and I was back in the Christmas memories of my childhood. Thinking of those old-fashioned decorations that used to hang across the street reminded me of the joyous times we spent Christmas shopping in downtown Danville. There were so many things to do and see that it was almost overwhelming to the mind of a child. There were department stores, shoe stores, clothiers, two dime stores, drug stores, restaurants, jewelers, and movie theaters. But my childhood favorite had to be the Gem Supply Store. They had a separate toy department. There was no better place in the world for me to go and look at the year's toy selection. Once I narrowed the list down to 10 or 20 of the most desired, I would spend the rest of the time wishing, hoping and dropping hints for my Christmas presents. Those wonderful times spent in the Gem Store certainly made my childhood happier.
