A Burgin man suspected of starting several fires was arrested Friday night when police staked out his residence and caught him leaving his house with a gas can.
Steven Stinnett, 30, of 214 West Main St., was charged with three felony counts of third-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief. He is being held in the Boyle County Detention Center under a $30,000 cash bond.
Burgin has been plagued by repeated trash fires since October, Caldwell said, but the blazes became more serious this week when two buildings were burned. Stinnett was considered a suspect but police could not directly link him to the fires until Friday, Caldwell said.
"We had already had this man in our sights as a probable suspect," he said. "The string of trash fires started in October, but he went big this last Monday morning."
