VERSAILLES - The Danville boys won the Woodford County Invitational for the first time Saturday, outscoring Paul Dunbar by 9 1/2 points to win the 26-team event.
Danville scored 253 points, while Dunbar, last season's combined state champion, had 243 1/2. Host Woodford County was third with 188.
"All of the swimmers improved their times, and a victory was a true team effort," Danville coach Mark Williams said.
The Danville girls were fifth in their competition with 168 points.
Danville's boys were led by the 200-yard medley relay team of Eric Smiley, Sebastian Pyrek, Jacob Reynolds and Michael Ward, which finished first with a time of 1 minute, 51.29 seconds.
"The first-place medley relay with one sophomore and three freshmen demonstrates that Danville has a bright future," Williams said.
Danville was third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, Jonathan Rankin was third in the 200 freestyle and Pyrek was third in the 100 breaststroke.
