Mercer stays perfect

The Mercer County girls kept their perfect record intact Monday, getting 19 points from Chrystal Claunch and 18 from Chelsea Goodman in a 65-42 win over Fairdale in the first round of the Owensboro Classic at Owensboro.

The Scotties (8-0) play Daviess County at 10 p.m. today in the second round.

Goodman drained four 3-pointers and handed out six assists and Claunch had five treys and five assists as Mercer went 9-for-27 from long distance. The Scotties also went 12-for-15 from the free throw line, grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and 29 overall.

Garrard County 53, Williamsburg 30: At Campbellsville, Ashley Meadows had 10 points and 15 boards for the Golden Lions in a win over Williamsburg in the first round of the Coca-Cola/Krystal Holiday Classic at Campbellsville High School.


Garrard (4-5) led 21-16 at the half and 32-24 after three quarters, but blew the game open with a 21-6 scoring surge in fourth quarter.

Syndey Napier led Garrard with 13 points and Wendi Logan added nine.

Boyle County 55, Model 50: At Berea, the Rebels trailed at the half but came from behind to beat Model at the Berea Invitational.

Brian Staed had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Boyle (3-5), Daniel Potts had seven points and six assists, Chad Terrell had 12 points and Scott Singleton and Smith Ahnquist each scored nine.

The Rebels led 47-37 after the third quarter before Model made a run to take a one-point lead with a minute left. David White's layup put Boyle back ahead for good at 51-50 and White and Terrell both hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.

Boyle hit all six free throw attempts in the second half and finished the game 11-for-16 at the foul line. The Rebels were 20-for-49 from the field and 4-for-14 from 3-point range. They were outrebounded 37-32.

Garrard County 92, Berea 75: At Berea, Spencer Crutchfield poured in 38 points and Zach Doan added 24 for the Golden Lions in a win over Berea in the first round of the Berea Invitational.

Kent Johnson had 11 points and Dan Leavell added 10 for Garrrard (3-5), which led 21-8 after the first quarter and 45-29 at the half. Garrard plays Buckhorn in today's second round.
