Lakeside bed & breakfast offers resort-style amenities

Technically speaking, Dot and Brad Dunn's Lakeview Point Bed & Breakfast is a B & B but it could just as well be called an "R & R" - for rest and relaxation.

Perched on a bluff along Herrington Lake in Mercer County, Lakeview Point offers a lot of resort-style amenities not usually found in most bed and breakfasts.

First, there's an expansive view of the lake and the farmland on the other side.

"You not only have the lake view but you can get a farm view, too," Dot Dunn said. "You can hear the cows mooing in the morning."

For summertime fun, Lakeview Point has an in-ground pool just out the back door and a boat dock on the lake below. (Guests can launch their boats at nearby Walkers Marina.)

All year-round, guests can enjoy the big-screen TV and DVD library in the common room, play pool or board games in the game room, and relax in the jacuzzi in the Florida room.

Lakeview Point has five guest rooms, each with a theme decor. The largest is the "fireplace suite," which opens out onto a deck overlooking the lake.

A full, "southern-style" breakfast is served

Dot Dunn serves a full, "southern-style" breakfast, including sweet potato biscuits, one of her specialties, in a dining room with large windows overlooking the lake.

"In the summertime, people like to go out and have breakfast around the pool," she said.

Other amenities include a "business center," which includes a computer and a fax/copy machine, for guests who want to check their e-mail or surf the 'Net.

Dot Dunn, who's "day job" is at the Toyota plant in Georgetown, purchased the white Georgia marble house last March. It sits on three acres of ground that includes a large parking area and a large metal building that Dunn hopes to turn into a reception hall for weddings and other gatherings.

Dunn, who grew up in Burgin and has lived in Lexington for a number years, said she was looking for a place to "retire to," when she heard about the Lakeview Point property off of Huguely Lane.

Her family has been in the barbecue business in Mercer County for many years, and her brother, Herb Dunn, and sister, Sheridan McKee, operate Dunn and Co. Catering. Dot Dunn operates the bed and breakfast with her son, Brad.

So far, she has had a number of guests from both inside and outside of Kentucky and has hosted swim parties and retreats for church groups from this area. Although learning the business has been a challenge, Dunn said she is enjoying it.

"I like meeting people," she said. "I come from a large family and like being around a lot of food and a lot of people."
