Police will keep their own New Year's Eve vigil tonight, beefing up patrols and putting up road blocks, to make sure revelers reach their destinations safely.
State police from Columbia and Richmond posts plan to have a full force of troopers out on the roads and have planned traffic checks throughout their post areas.
Lt. Merrell Harrison at the Richmond post said troopers will be looking for people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and speeders.
"Ironically, the time we consider the best for our family unity and friendship often leads to destroying those same families and friends," state police said in a statement Wednesday. "This holiday season, area law enforcement will join together to combat this serious issue, people shouldn't being dying on our highways. Drinking and driving is a choice, and we plan on being out on the highways trying our best to prevent this from occurring."
