Honoring school board members

January 21, 2005

Dear Editor:

President John F. Kennedy said, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."

As Boyle County Schools joins 14,885 school districts throughout the United States in celebrating January as School Board Recognition Month, I ask that we honor those who have pledged to serve.

I also ask that we go forward as a community to consider, in concert with our leaders, what we value and to what extent we serve as instruments to affect meaningful change to support what we value. What part do we play? How can we serve?

Preston Miles has served on the Boyle board since 1989, Sharon Johnson, since 1993, and Ruth Ann Elliott, since 2003. Last month we honored our outgoing board members, Tommy McGirr, who had served since 1997, and Ed Sleet, who had served since 1999. Please join me in thanking these people for their time, due diligence and commitment to the work of our public schools.

Joining the Boyle board this month are Alane Mills and Steve Tamme, both with considerable history of supporting young people in Boyle County, Alane as a teacher and Steve as an active parent volunteer. Please join me in congratulating these two who have chosen to serve our schools.

Board members serve as the corporate board of directors for one of our community's largest employers, whose annual budget in the case of Boyle County Schools exceeds $20 million. That's a tremendous responsibility, especially when you realize they have to seek a balance between the needs of our students and the revenues with which we have to work.

In meeting this challenge, board members remain in a constant state of learning, and in so doing, stand as symbols of a professional community focused on learning. They also serve as examples to all of public service, the foundation of our public schools and the fabric of this society that draws its leadership from the general public.
