Garrard lets violator stay on solid waste board

February 23, 2005|BOBBIE CURD

LANCASTER - Garrard Fiscal Court agreed today to let Marvin Gill remain on the county's Solid Waste Committee.

Gill was appointed last week by the Fiscal Court after volunteering to serve, but the appointment met with opposition because Gill has been cited for violating the county's solid waste ordinance.

Angela Bowling, secretary of the committee, spoke for the group this morning at a special Fiscal Court meeting.

"Since he said last night that he will clean up his property, and as long as he does, we're fine with him staying on," Bowling said.

Gill attended his first committee meeting Tuesday night.

Chairman John Dixon welcomed four new members, including Gill, and attempted to familiarize them with the bylaws, goals and prior accomplishments of the committee.

A committee member asked for a review from Bill Hack, the county's solid waste coordinator, on the total number of letters sent out to local residents who are in violation of the ordinance and questioned what the group's next step will be with those in violation.

Gill then spoke out and said he had "been told" by a magistrate that he had been put on notification for being in violation of the ordinance with three separate certified letters, and he wanted the members to know that he had only received one.

"I was told that I was given 60 days to clean up the cars in my yard, and I can either sell them or put up a fence, but a fence will cost money," Gill said to the group.

Dixon spoke up, explaining to Gill that his question was not an issue for the committee.

"We're not here to discuss this. That is between you and Hack, and doesn't need to take place. This is not what the committee is here for," Dixon said.

Gill said he knew this, but he wanted the committee to know that he was going to "clean it up," but it would take some time.

The committee meets at 6:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of every month at the courthouse.
