Supports continued beer sales at Old Crow Inn

March 14, 2005

Dear Editor:

I graduated from high school with state Rep. Mike Harmon, and I disagree with his position on alcohol sales. Our community is happy to allow sales by the drink which seems to facilitate drinking and driving. However, if you wish to buy beer at the Old Crow Inn and take it home to drink in your own space, well, I suppose you are a criminal. There have been arguments that people buying beer at Old Crow are from out of town. I say great, more money for the government to build ridiculous things we don't need.

If it's all for public safety, then by all means ban everything harmful. But, let's face it, it's about money. If you can drink at a restaurant, then you should be able to buy beer at a store, inn or grocery.

Most people have a problem with Old Crow because it has somewhat of a monopoly on beer sales. The federal government has said that alcohol sales are legal. Prohibition failed once, so accept it: Society drinks.

I know it's not a righteous argument, but I have known people who went out of town to buy beer and wrecked coming home. Would legal beer sales solve this? Perhaps not, but it would solve a lot of drinking and driving accidents in our own community. Think what you will, but those under-age folks will find a way to get alcohol. Always have, always will. At least Old Crow checks every ID before they sell. Can you say the same thing for every liqour store, gas station or convience store in Springfield, Lawrenceburg or Nicholasville?
